Joanna brings over 20 years of professional experience in the strategic design, management, monitoring and evaluation of complex, large-scale international health and economic development programs. She has wide-ranging expertise in project and grant management, financial oversight, new business development, and the direction and supervision of teams.
Joanna has held long-term positions with several international non-governmental organizations including the UK-based Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), the Los Angeles-based Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), and Development Alternatives, Inc. (DAI) in Washington, DC. Selected examples of Joanna’s experience include: leading the day-to-day management of CIFF’s $50 million investment under the Accelerating Children’s HIV/AIDS Treatment (ACT) initiative, an ambitious $200 million public-private partnership with the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief across 9 countries in sub-Saharan Africa; managing a global team based in the United States and Africa to implement a large grants-management contract for 13 international and local organizations; and overseeing EGPAF’s multimillion-dollar private donor funding portfolio, including awards from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Johnson & Johnson, and Abbot Fund. Joanna has worked throughout the world, in Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, India, China, Georgia, Macedonia, Poland, Romania and Russia.
Joanna values and places high importance on relationship building, partnerships, and community engagement. She is known for her strong interpersonal and communication skills, diplomatic approach, and expertise working with diverse stakeholders and partners including governments, multi-lateral organizations, private corporations, philanthropies, non-profits, and universities. Joanna is diligent, accountable, reliable, and trusty-worthy; she is excited to use her skill set and extensive management experience to add value to the Wilson Marshall team and its clients.
After residing in Europe and the United States for several years in order to pursue both educational and professional endeavors, Joanna made the decision to permanently relocate with her family back to her beautiful hometown of Victoria, B.C. When not working, Joanna spends much of her time at the rink with her two teenage sons (Emmitt and Sidney) and her husband Rob Armstrong, an ice hockey skills coach and owner of Hockey Evolution. Joanna also enjoys cooking, traveling, spending quality time with good friends and family, and hiking with her dog Maggie.
